FIFA World Cup 1934

The 1934 World Cup, held in Italy from 27 May to 10 June, was the first tournament to feature a qualifying competition and expanded to 16 teams, although defending champions Uruguay declined to take part. Played entirely as a knockout competition, it produced some entertaining first-round ties: Germany beat Belgium 5–2, Austria edged France 3–2 after extra time, Hungary defeated Egypt 4–2, Spain beat Brazil 3–1 and Sweden eliminated the previous finalists Argentina 3–2. The hosts Italy began with a 7–1 thrashing of the United States before being pushed hard by Spain in the quarter-finals, drawing 1–1 and then winning the replay 1–0; elsewhere, Austria beat Hungary 2–1 and Germany defeated Sweden 2–1. In the semi-finals, Czechoslovakia beat Germany 3–1, while Italy edged out the highly regarded Austrian side 1–0, setting up a final in Rome. Czechoslovakia took the lead through Antonín Puč, but Italy equalised through Raimundo Orsi and then Angelo Schiavio scored in extra time to give the hosts a 2–1 victory and their first World Cup title; Germany beat Austria 3–2 in the third-place match, while Czechoslovakia's Oldřich Nejedlý finished as top scorer with five goals.
