Football Kit Design Timeline

1968-69

The French league, Ligue Nationale de Football, authorised its clubs to wear sponsor logos on their shirts. It signed a contract with Vittel, a bottled spring water brand, to appear on all team shirts in Division 1 and Division 2.

The first teams to wear the Vittel name were Saint Etienne and Olympique Lyonnais during their derby match (see below), however the television network ORTF refused to broadcast any matches where sponsorship was visible.
